Most HTML books don't bother to give beginners an introduction to the workings of the World Wide Web because the Web doesn't directly influence writing HTML documents. Powell provides this information because it eventually makes it easier for readers to understand why their HTML Web sites behave as they do. Powell begins the book with introductory chapters that discuss HTML and Web background and set the limits of what HTML coding alone can accomplish. From there he moves into lessons in basic HTML and progresses chapter by chapter to such high-end topics as advanced layout techniques, how to standardize Web-page presentation among browsers with style sheets, programmed Web pages, and client-side scripting and programming. Thomas Powell has been professionally involved in the Internet community since 1987.
His career began with network support at UCLA’s PICnet, followed by several years at
CERFnet. In 1994, he founded Powell Internet Consulting, LLC (www.pint.com), a firm
specializing in advanced Web design and development.
Powell is the author of two other popular Web development books: Web Site
Engineering (with Dominique Cutts and David Jones) and the HTML Programmer's
Reference (with Dan Whitworth). He has written extensively about the Web and
development technologies for NetGuide, Internet Week, Interactive Age, Communications
Week, and Network World.
Mr. Powell teaches Web publishing classes through the Information Technologies
program at UCSD Extension. He holds a B.S. in Math Applied Science from UCLA and
an M.S. in Computer Science from UCSD.
